Phase 1 of Fire Safety Installation Complete

Four residential child care facilities have now received new fire safety systems. This brings to a close phase 1 of a two-year project to outfit 30 RCCFs across the island with life-saving equipment and training on what to do in the event a fire occurs.

The completion was commemorated with a handover and brief training session with caregivers of Homestead Place of Safety and Jamaica National Children’s Home at HPOS last week. Other homes in this phase included Yadel Home for Girls, Strathmore Children’s Home and Reddie’s Place of Safety.

In February, SVL Foundation, Jamaica Fire Brigade and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information partnered through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to improve fire safety and security at RCCFs, at a cost of $40 million. The project continues with installation currently underway in five Mustard Seed homes, while phase 3 set to start this month.

National Safety Limited and Comprehensive Fire Service Limited have been contracted to carry out the installations.
